ReGeCom at the SADC Transfrontier Conservation Areas International Conference

ReGeCom had the honor of participating in the SADC Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) International Conference, held in Harare, Zimbabwe, from May 19–20, 2025. The event, convened under the theme “SADC TFCAs: 25 Years of Cooperation for Regional Integration and Sustainable Development,” brought together governments, civil society, development partners, and technical institutions from across the region.

ReGeCom’s participation was part of the Community Leaders Network, which was made possible through support from Conservation International and SADC secretariat. Representing ReGeCom at the event was Cremildo Armando, from RARE Mozambique — a ReGeCom member actively involved in driving the community governance agenda, through the Community Governance Working Group.

This international platform provided a valuable opportunity to share our experiences, exchange insights, and build strategic partnerships for the sustainable governance of transboundary ecosystems. Of particular relevance was the ZIMOZA Transfrontier Conservation Area, which includes the Magoe National Park landscape — a key area where ReGeCom is currently applying its community governance approach to strengthen conservation and improve livelihoods, in collaboration with Magoe National Park.

One of the key themes explored during the conference was how to improve the livelihoods of communities living in and around transboundary conservation areas. Delegates identified several persistent challenges, including inconsistent policies, funding gaps, and the growing impact of climate change. The conference concluded that community empowerment is essential for the success of transboundary conservation, and that community support is directly tied to the realization of tangible benefits.

These insights closely align with ReGeCom’s own vision and approach to community governance. Currently, ReGeCom is implementing its governance model across five key landscapes in Mozambique — three of which are part of regional Transfrontier Conservation Areas: (i) ZIMOZA (Magoe) TFCA; (ii) Chimanimani TFCA; (iii) Elephant Coast-Lubombo TFCA.

ReGeCom remains committed to fostering inclusive governance models that elevate the role of local communities as stewards of conservation and sustainable development.
